  PFP Doctors Address Women's Health Crisis in Nigeria


Women's Health Initiative in Nigeria 
Young mothers in Nigeria are able to start a whole new life thanks to a simple procedure.  

A team of volunteer physicians recently completed a mission to Kaduna, Nigeria, where they helped local doctors address the overwhelming need of medical care for woman who are afflicted with a complication of child birth known as VVF. This condition results from prolonged labor, often in women aged 11-15, whose pelvic structure is too small for successful vaginal births. The affects of the resulting condition cause the women to be rejected by their families and communities, often ending up homeless with no way to care for their children. This devastating condition can be cured with simple sugery, if it is made available...

On April 29th the White House held a special event to honor the spirit of philanthropy and volunteerism in America. Six volunteers from Physicians for Peace were invited to attend, receiving national recognition for their work in developing countries around the world. 

Physicians for Peace would like to commend all of our volunteers, whose time, hard work, and dedication help us to fulfull our mission every day.

Physicians for Peace has recently become a partner for the Volunteers for Prosperity Service Initiative Program (VFPServ). The program, managed by GlobalGiving (http://www.globalgiving.com/) and funded by Volunteers for Prosperity (http://www.volunteersforprosperity.gov/), provides matching funds for volunteers to participate in short-term Physicians for Peace medical missions. Award-winning photographer Stephen Katz recently traveled to the Dominican Republic with Chris Tyree to document work by PFP doctors in several clinics in and around Santiago. This year, at the Physicians for Peace annual fundraising gala on Saturday, October 4th, 2008, we will be honoring Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D.  with our Charles E. Horton, Sr. Humanitarian Award for Global Health. He richly deserves this award for his work around the world on issues of global health, and we will be honored to have him as our guest. So mark the date on your calendars, and join us this Fall at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. It will be an evening to remember!

PFP’s Dr. Haile Mezghebe, now serving as our Post Graduate Medical Education Director in Asmara, Eritrea, received a delegation from The George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC) to officially “cut
the ribbon” on our residency school there. The delegation
met with Eritrea’s President and has been conducting
training for the new faculty.  This is a project that
Physicians for Peace has been working towards for more
than a year, and it is now a reality.
