BURN CARE TRAINING
Every three seconds, someone around the world requires medical attention for burns and approximately 11 million severe burn cases occur globally, every year.
ARE AMONG THE MOST
DEVASTATING OF ALL INJURIES
and a major global public health concern. Burns are lifetime injuries resulting in disabilities and disfigurements, which have psychological, social, and economic effects on the survivors and their families.
With your help, we improve the health of patients with burn injuries in under-resourced communities by training doctors, surgeons, nurses, therapists and other burn specialists to promote best practices and advance their competencies, skills, and leadership.
TO BURN CARE
Burn care is a highly specialized field that requires skilled, knowledgeable caregivers.
PFP trains an array of healthcare providers, including surgeons, nurses, therapists, psychologists, and social workers, who work with burn patients at different stages of their recovery.
OUR APPROACH TO TRAINING
We work with hospitals, clinics, and health centers located in low and middle income countries to determine - collaboratively - where our expertise can be useful in addressing gaps in knowledge and skills.
When our team of medical educators travel to these sites, they meet with their counterparts, and through multidisciplinary lectures, hands-on workshops, side by side educational activities, and direct services to patients - both in and out of the operating room, they teach and share knowledge on locally identified priority topics.
PFP offers medical providers both classroom and hands-on instruction in the areas of initial burn care, acute and reconstructive surgery, nurse education, rehabilitative therapy and psycho-social support, among others. We align our work with the Practice Guidelines for Burn Care proposed by the International Society of Burn Injuries (ISBI), focusing on essential burn care providers and facilities.
NATIONAL AND REGIONAL TRAININGS
In-field training activities allow us not only to deliver training to our in-country host partner’s burn care staff members, but also to gather a diverse group of national and regional burn care professionals to maximize these training efforts.
For regional trainings, we invite healthcare workers from different hospitals in Central and South America to travel to the host's site to join the in-field training. The result is a more rich discussion, where exchange of information is given among attendees, enhancing national and regional coalitions, and ensuring the creation of a support network among them.
At PFP we have creating online events that are engaging and support local educational priorities. The objective is to use regionally accessible technology, such as Zoom, to enable mentorship and remote training experiences which respond to training needs at PFP partner hospitals and clinics. Training topics are generated by partner healthcare professionals and IMEs.
The development of competency-based courses blend academic content with the soft skills and core competencies that burn healthcare providers need to take care of their patients.
These courses have both didactic and hands-on activities and are based on students “showing what they know” and applying the concepts, attitudes, and skills they’ve learned.
Currently, we have developed courses for burn nurses and burn therapists using global standards and PFP volunteer expertise.
BURN CONFERENCES, RESEARCH, AND PUBLICATIONS
As a means of supporting continuing education, sharing of best practices, and professional development, PFP encourages our partners and trainees to pursue research,
to submit articles for publication, and to participate in
healthcare conferences to share their work through formal oral and poster presentations. This also serves as an additional means of networking and strengthening local and regional collaboration and coalitions
Physicians for Peace has a robust burn-care training program serving countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, where the need is intense.
Our volunteer medical educators have taught their skills and knowledge to thousands of healthcare providers working with populations at risk of burn injuries.
