by Megan McCarthy, PFP volunteer Occupational Therapist and Specialist in Burns
In February 2019, I embarked on a journey to Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) in Mwanza, Tanzania, with the goal of improving burn rehabilitation. While my initial efforts were fruitful, it became clear that sustainable change required a more comprehensive approach. This led me to develop a mentorship program that would not only transfer knowledge but also foster growth and empowerment among local therapists.
The Missing Piece - Why Mentorship Matters
Despite years of volunteer efforts and training opportunities, I observed knowledge gaps persisting among the therapists at BMC. It became evident that segmented training alone was insufficient to create true experts in rehabilitation. Inspired by my own personal development, I realized the transformative power of mentorship in integrating new knowledge into practice and developing practical skills.
More Than the Sum of Its Parts: The Benefits of Collaboration
To bring my vision to life, I sought partnerships with non-profit organizations. After several unsuccessful attempts, I connected with Physicians for Peace, whose Senior Program Director, Leslie Long, immediately embraced my idea. With the support of Physicians for Peace and the collaboration of the International Society for Burn Injuries, we established a burn rehabilitation competency and mentorship program, that was a replication of a similar burn rehabilitation mentorship program that Physicians for Peace conducted in 2019 in Colombia.
A Closer Look
The mentorship program covers the essential clinical domains of burn rehabilitation therapy, providing physical and occupational therapists with the skills to support burn survivors throughout their recovery.
Through a combination of in-person training, virtual meetings, and collaborations with technology-focused organizations like Ohana One and Vuzix, we aim to:
Build capacity: Equip therapists with targeted knowledge and skills.
Provide technical support: Offer guidance on complex cases and evidence-based practices.
Foster innovation: Expert guidance in how to get started in research and publications and creative approaches to care that further improvements in burn rehabilitation.
Expand networks: Connect therapists with experts and opportunities for professional development.
The Lasting Impact of Mentorship
The program has demonstrated the transformative power of mentorship beyond knowledge transfer. It has fostered confidence, empowerment, and a culture of sharing knowledge. By building relationships and providing ongoing support, we have successfully developed advanced burn rehabilitation practitioners.
At Physicians for Peace, we believe health and peace are intertwined.
My journey from a single individual with a passion for change to a catalyst for global impact highlights the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting organizations like Physicians for Peace. By investing in programs that empower local communities and foster sustainable solutions, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of burn survivors worldwide.
Let’s create a world where peace begins with health.
